Community Stars Celebrate Their TV Guide Magazine Fan Faves Victory

Community It's scarcely been the very best week on Community's set. On November 14, NBC introduced its The month of january schedule, and also the acclaimed cult comedy concerning the eccentric people of the community-college study group whose outsize, genre-bending adventures frequently boggle your brain didn't have for action. It's likely to return and finished out its season later in 2012, but gallows humor has occur: Once the cast shot a scene within the show's study room, a note around the blackboard read, "The Television thingy did not exercise.Inch The following Friday, however, midway through their third season, the cast collected for any photo shoot, where they found that their Little Reveal That Could but still Might have been named, via online voting, TV Guide Magazine's second annual Fan Faves champion, generating the magazine's cover. Fists were pumped. Yelps were yelped. Alison Brie, who plays the semi-innocent Annie, improvised a rap ("We've got a trophy, years old!"). Chevrolet Chase (also known as the unaware, wealthy reprobate Pierce) was impressed the trophy really were built with a nice inscription onto it. "Because we do not get nominated for honours, this will be our fans' outlet," states Gillian Jacobs, who plays digital rebel-with-too-many-causes Britta. "They might avoid seeing us win Emmys or SAG Honours, however they will have the energy within this, and also you see many people care. It's satisfying to possess a devoted military." Some cast people, like Joel McHale (who stars because the snarkily charming Shaun) and Yvette Nicole Brown (passive-strongly religious Shirley), implored fans to election for that show on the Twitter feeds. "We simply got benched, which isn't liberating, and also to discover exactly the same week we are the fans' favorite? That's amazing," Brown exults. "I'd say it's bittersweet, but it is not - it is simply sweet." It had been news to Chase this competition even been around. "I am impressed there's this kind of award which we first got it, and when I am this is not on the coverage, I'm going to be deeply upset," he deadpans. (Never fear, Chevrolet - you are on our three collectible covers.) Jim Rash, who plays the school's überquirky Dean Pelton, jokes, "I believe we won because all of us privately chosen." Adds Danny Pudi (pop-culture conduit Abed), "That's the way we all broke our laptops, the multiple voting." Possibly no cast member was more touched through the victory than Ken Jeong, who plays the deeply strange Chang. "This really is something we do not ignore,Inch Jeong states. "I had been your physician, and also the only reason I gave that up happens because I needed to follow along with what I enjoy do. This proves in my experience that should you choose the very best you are able to, good stuff sometimes happens.Inch McHale - who taken care of immediately the win having a hearty "Holy garbage!" - thinks the show's group of followers does not follow the usual notions of TV audiences. "Our fans don't watch television the way in which others do," he states. "Used to do a stand-up show in the College of Arizona and there have been 30 kids who went the big event. I stated, 'How a lot of you watch Community?' plus they all elevated their hands, that was great. I requested, 'How many watch it Thursdays at 8pm?' Zero hands. I requested, 'How a lot of you've Televisions?' Four hands. I requested, 'How a lot of you watch on computer systems?' All hands increased. That might be a reason, but our audience skews youthful. However with something similar to this, they election. That's how rabid they're, so that's great." AFM opens with plenty of appetite

The American Film Market opens today at Loews Santa Monica with buyer registration up 10% and general attendance tracking higher. Robert De Niro in "Red Lights" Ron Howard will be meeting with buyers today to discuss his Formula 1 racing project "Rush," starring Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruh. Cautious optimism is the prevailing sentiment at the Loews in Santa Monica as the 32nd edition of the American Film Market opens today. Buyer registration is up 10% with more than 90 new buying companies and general attendance is tracking higher, according to AFM managing director Jonathan Wolf. A total of 415 films will screen over eight days -- 69 world premieres, 310 market premieres and 29 in 3D. "We're getting a lot of calls about our titles like 'The Gray' and 'Broken City' and it's good that the international marketplace has bounced back," noted Inferno Entertainment partner Bill Johnson. "But my expectation is that AFM won't be as crazy as Cannes." Inferno's hoping to echo its experience at last year's AFM in November, when pre-sales on Brad Pitt and Richard Jenkins' starrer "Cogan's Trade" drew a flurry of deals with international distribs before the Weinstein Co. snapped it up for the U.S. in January. As usual, titles with recognizable casts that can play well across the globe are key at AFM. And with more buyers in the mix, activity's been fairly robust in the past two weeks with pre-sales to key territories getting locked down. Still, there's nothing like face to face contact -- such as Ron Howard meeting with buyers to to discuss production on "Rush," with Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruh starring in the true story of the rivalry between 1970s Formula 1 champs James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Exclusive Media Group is handling sales. Studiocanal is reported to be bringing Joel and Ethan Coen to AFM to discuss their new film "Inside Llewyn Davis" and meet with potential buyers. Should that come to pass, it would mirror what happened last year when Exclusive brought George Clooney to Loews to shop "Ides of March." Sellers have more to sell -- but are also taking a measured approach. Focus Features Intl. will be screening "Another Bullshit Night in Suck City" to select buyers at the market this year. But Focus will not be showing footage of the Wachowski siblings' "Cloud Atlas" to buyers this year. The bullishness in the market comes five months after a better-than-expected activity at the Cannes Film Festival and a solid -- but hardly spectacular -- showing in Toronto, where the biggest sale turned out to be the $5 million that CBS Films paid for "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen." "With buyers up and screenings on par with last year, we expect a very healthy and active market," said the AFM's Wolf. The indie side of the business was hammered between late 2008 and early 2010 before beginning to recover in time for last year's AFM. Obtaining financing became tougher, while studios decided to focus on tentpoles and cede much of the mid-budget arena to indie producers. Andrew Ruf, head of Paradigm's motion picture financing group, believes that the financial crisis has resulted in industry players becoming much sharper in what they're bringing to AFM. "I think people are being a lot smarter about budgets and casts," Ruf said. "The margin for error is much smaller. If you come in fast and loose, you're going to have a very tough time." Ruf said that it's particularly crucial to come in to AFM with the right budget -- particularly in the $3 million to $15 million range, if the cast isn't highly recognizable. "In that range, you're going to have a hard time recouping," he added. Still, plenty of independently-sold pics -- "Black Swan," "The King's Speech," "Limitless," "Insidious," "Source Code," "The Lincoln Lawyer" -- show that filmgoers will turn out for the right mix of indie elements. Julie Sultan, president of international sales at W2, said that the positive vibes from those successes remains very much in the minds of those attending AFM. "The film business is full of optimistic people," she adds. "People have budgets left at the end of the year and although they may have a full slate, they will always have room for more." Sultan also believes that AFM activity will stay strong throughout next week. "We will be taking a lot of meetings toward the end of the market," she notes. As constituted, the series may be the oddest of constructs -- a publish-apocalyptic cleaning soap opera, essentially, with a reasonable "ick" step to attract males. Ambling in sufficient time for Halloween, one suspects the rankings will even provide AMC by having an early Christmas present. It's not hard to forget there have been only six instances of "Dead's" maiden run, a brief order that most likely assisted immeasurably by not overstaying the show's welcome. Among individuals who will not be adhering around is Darabont, whose script for that opener is credited towards the pseudonym "Ardeth Bey," a.k.a. the Mummy. Backstage drama notwithstanding, the brand new batch (and staying away from spoilers comes down to writing with one hands gnawed off by zombies) continues too explore the strained group dynamics, challenge maintaining belief when confronted with horror and questions if the central band can ever find anything approaching peace and security. (Answer: Less lengthy once we require more episodes, so suck up, whiners!) For their credit, the producers adapting the graphic novel have handled to produce tension on two distinct fronts: One involves staying away from the ravenous zombies walking our planet, and also the other focuses on the fate of Sheriff Ron Grimes (Andrew Lincoln subsequently) and the wife Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies), who were built with a dalliance with Rick's friend and partner, Shane (Jon Bernthal), when she thought her husband dead. Individuals unsettled situations persist, and it is a positive thing, because in reality, "The Walking Dead" meanders for lengthy stretches with little really happening. The constant threat -- zombies around every corner, Lori and Shane's past being uncovered -- moves irritatingly over everything. Beyond a few truly stomach-churning moments thanks to the special-Forex magicians, the 2nd season showcases the topnotch cast the producers have put together, along with the program's skill pushing terror in broad daylight. Possibly the greatest hurdle facing "Walking Dead" is the fact that with no ray of hope -- some "Omega Guy"-like possibility of survival -- the series turns into a bleak dying march, waiting to determine what if the regular figures are expendable, or maybe the casualties is going to be limited to bit gamers and guest stars, such as the red-colored-shirted crewmen on "Star Trek." Enlightened (Series Cinemax)

Laura Dern and Luke Wilson in HBO's "Enlightened" Credits: Shot in La and Hawaii by Rip Cord. Executive producers, Mike Whitened, Laura Dern co-executive producers, Miguel Arteta, Edward Saxon producers, David Bernad, Jason Weinberg, Timothy Marx co-producer, Gianna Wise author-director, Whitened story by Whitened, Dern.Amy Jellicoe - Laura Dern Levi - Luke Wilson Helen - Diane Ladd Krista - Sarah Burns Dougie - Timm Sharp Judy - Amy Hill Tyler - Mike WhiteShowtime has excelled in a certain type of attention-getting half-hour -- high-concept series featuring large-title female leads, with styles (cancer substance abuse multiple personas) that practically market themselves. By comparison, it's difficult to think about a lesser concept than HBO's "Enlightened," an offbeat showcase for Laura Dern that, after watching four episodes, still is not completely obvious regarding its intentions. At the disposal of author/co-star Mike Whitened, that isn't entirely bad, however the unorthodox tone and psychologically fragile protagonist suggest this strange journey of self-discovery will harbor narrow appeal even by pay TV's refined standards. Dern's Amy includes a jaw-shedding meltdown at the office within the opening moments, getting been moved from her job in a large corporation after an affair gone wrong together with her married boss (Timm Sharp). An idyllic, existence-altering interlude in a counseling retreat in Hawaii follows, where she cavorts with ocean turtles, finds inner-peace and starts soothingly narrating her very own spiritual reclamation. "I'll change. And I'll be a real estate agent of change," Amy states in voice-over, following her epiphany. Upon her return, though, Amy's harmony is examined repeatedly. Her former assistant (Sarah Burns) continues to be marketed, while she has been consigned towards the bowels of the organization, encircled by other nonwinners (included in this one performed by Whitened). Her ex-husband (Luke Wilson), while mostly supportive, does not wish to accomplish much but sit around smoking pot and her mother (Diane Ladd, Dern's real-existence mother) examines her like she just beamed lower in the Enterprise. Can Amy maintain her new-found tranquility and discover -- or maintain -- the peace she professes to possess accomplished, especially inside a conglomerate that cares not really a whit about her? Whitened appears going to test that time, with Amy's unnervingly upbeat exterior (which recalls the religiously converted in Michael Tolkin's "The Rapture") from time to time giving method to fits of rage that suggest her Modern transformation has not fully taken hold. It's possible to understand why Dern (who shares story credit with Whitened) was attracted towards the role -- and possibly even why Cinemax would gamble on somebody as notoriously idiosyncratic because the director, whose indie-film sensibility (see "Chuck & Buck" and "The Great Girl") has pay-TV written throughout it. Nevertheless, it's tough to determine to whom "Enlightened" is supposed, concurrently mocking and exalting the self-help movement, without really showing precisely where it stands. With that measure, the show's ethereal characteristics are interesting in places but never particularly informative, and it is pairing with HBO's cool but considerably larger "Bored to Dying" -- within the latest make an effort to expand the channel's original-series footprint to Monday nights -- feels as though a particularly low-wattage combination. Gossip Girl Boss Josh Safran: Blair Has Selected Her Guy, L.A. Is the best Spot for Serena

Penn Badgley, Leighton Meester and Hugo Becker Some tips about what Gossip Girl executive producer Josh Safran does not - and will not - discuss if this involves the show's fifth season: the identity of who's pregnant, a potential second peek at Oscar-nominated director David O. Russell (so astounded by Serena's understanding from the Beautiful and Damned he handed her a summer time job), Ivy, the location from the real Charlie (and when it even matters), the autumn-from Dan's Upper East Side-bashing book, Georgina, gone-but-angry outcast Vanessa ... Fall preview: Get scoop in your favorite coming back shows Fortunately, a number of individuals high cliff-wardrobe hangers will immediately be worked with when Gossip Girl returns (Monday, 8/7c, CW). TVGuide.com rather got Safran's ideas about why Blair is just about the show's most fascinating character (undoubtedly), why is this year more enjoyable than last (even when it did not come from Paris) and why Serena could find yourself being the very best movie producer ever: In the finish of last season, you stated Serta (Penn Badgley) and Blair (Leighton Meester) were totally not over. Josh Safran: I uphold that statement. So there's Chuck (Erectile dysfunction Westwick) and also the Prince (Hugo Becker) and Serta - Blair is going to be selecting among three men? Safran: Blair isn't selecting. Blair has selected her guy. But while you saw within the season finale, Serta continues to have feelings for Blair. And Chuck and Blair possess a complicated relationship - and that i use that term meaning in the manner people connect with one another, not relationship as with partnership. There is a connection that's ever present. It's certainly an extremely unique ... square? Gossip Girl: Serta and Blair aren't over! Plus, more season-ending spoilers Blair is certainly probably the most interesting person on the program at this time. Safran: I am sure it has been in TV before, but so far as we are concerned it has not (laughs), but we are very excited by various sides to Blair. It's like Chuck stated in the finish from the last season's finale: you will find great loves and you will find right loves. One's heart really is limitless, it does not just get chock-full once and that is it. Each one of the males fulfill different needs in Blair, and one thing she struggles with this particular months are looking for who fills in the most, probably the most you will need to construct a existence with. For the time being, Blair's busy planning her royal wedding, right? What type of extravagance are we able to expect that? Safran: Many of the authors are married, therefore it is been fun to delve back to, like, whenever you did the wedding cake-tasting -- let's suppose it is the cake-tasting for any future princess. And it is Gossip Girl so even when it had been a "standard wedding"... even at Lily (Kelly Rutherford) and Rufus' (Matthew Settle) wedding, you realize, Sonic Youth performed. So imagine our royal wedding. Can you say Blair one-ups William and Kate? Safran: It isn't a mentioned goal, however we'd fascination with the marriage to appear as lovely as that. It is simply that on network television 2011 it's unlikely. Hopefully it rivals that - they are certainly going to possess a huge beautiful Monegasque wedding. See which duos made our listing of best TV couples You've known as this approaching fifth season lighter and much more fun. Had you been searching for something new from this past year? Safran: Well, the Juliet (Katie Cassidy) story was twisty and dark also it took it's origin from revenge and also the wrongs of history, and last season started with Chuck getting been shot and what went down to him, the sadness of Blair within the Chuck and Jenny (Taylor Momsen) factor ... I was entering the growing season with many different darkness and reaching towards the light after that ... we simply saw this year as like: OK, let us open with La, land of sun and breezes and all sorts of that stuff. And just how did filming in L.A. rival Paris? Safran: I am talking about, nothing even compares to shooting in Paris! Shooting in La is incredible - the deck hands are wonderful, the cast was great, the locations are beautiful. But Paris is Paris. Whenever we pick support, Serena (Blake Lively) includes a place she's residing in L.A. and also the boys possess a yacht. And you will hear precisely how they were given that yacht within the premiere. But so far as La, it's certainly the Gossip Girl version from it. We are on the backlot, the thing is the sea - although not from the Malibu beach house because that's Entourage's L.A., that isn't our L.A. I was searching for very mid-century modern houses, Neutras, that type of sleek, sexy, glamorous L.A. Like, as we might have shot in the Chateau, we'd have. Serena did not like as being a personal publicist. Now it appears as if she's arrived employment she likes in Hollywood. Sensible choice on her? Safran: I actually do think Serena's abilities as someone who's the middle of attention and who brings people together and who, you realize, wears a shoe and all of a sudden everybody wants that shoe, In my opinion, yes, Hollywood is most likely an excellent spot for her. Especially being along the side of film that they is - not acting, but behind the curtain on the producer-type track, somebody that can put things the ones and projects together. Also in L.A. is Elizabeth Hurley's character, Diana Payne, a media mogul having a keen curiosity about Gossip Girl. We know she'll connect with Nate (Chace Crawford), why is she thinking about this site? Safran: Anybody who originates from media in NY City is extremely conscious of Gossip Girl like a major media presence and Diana virtually really wants to be towards the top of the media game. She sees Gossip Girl as a means of this. How about Dan's novel (Upper East Side tell-all)? How large may be the fall-out likely to be? Safran: That story really will unfold pretty gradually - gradually for Gossip Girl anyways - therefore it will not be immediate but it'll have reverberations through the whole season. Allow me to request one other way: Is anybody happy about his book being released? Safran: Certainly you will find an array of responses positive to negative.

Not such a long time ago There Were living a simple Lady (Zila-bila odna baba)

A Film Co. production. (Worldwide sales: Film Co., Moscow.) Produced by Andrey Smirnov, Elena Smirnova. Directed, put together by Andrey Smirnov. With: Darya Yekamasova, Vlad Abashin, Maxim Averin, Aleksey Serebryakov, Aleksey Shevshenkov, Roman Madynav, Vsevolod Shilovsky.Getting abandoned pointing for thirty years, exasperated by Soviet censorship, vet Russian helmer Andrey Smirnov returns with "Not such a long time ago There Were living a simple Lady," an ambitious, 156-minute epic replay in the Russian Revolution as seen using the googly eyes from the peasant who comprises in survival capabilities what she lacks in brainpower. If fellow returnee Alexi German's "Krustalyov, My Vehicle!" (1998) seeping finished 12 years' cost of passionate film ideas, "Once" teems with thirty years of misanthropic, near-apocalyptic bitterness. Strikingly pictorial, fest-friendly but mean-spirited auteur curio will not really find distribution outdoors Eastern Europe. Smirnov's saga spans time of 1909-23 in Tambov, a person's heart in the bloody peasant revolt of 1920-21 against collectivization. It signifies a period of time as superstitious, venal and brutal as were the Dark Age range in Tarkovsky's "Andrei Rublev," that "Once" will most likely be unflatteringly in contrast. Smirnov's heroine, Varvara (Darya Yakamasova), suffers through greater than her share of beatings, rapes and assorted indignities consequently of relatives (she's whipped ferociously by her father-in-law each time a equine under her care falls sick), husbands (four, finally count), marauding soldiers and finished others. Pic is split up into two parts, the initial section research in limited awareness that juxtaposes Varvara's uncomprehending, slack-jawed stare while using bigger historic forces playing out round her. Inside the second part, that tension forget about fuels the narrative as she begins to activate, as being a childless Mother Courage carving out her corner of exploitation within the political morass of publish-revolutionary Russia. Because the Bolsheviks are clearly cast as archvillains, their impossible, starvation-inducing grain levies and chapel desecrations driving the peasants to revolt, Smirnov makes little distinction involving the natural bestiality in the peasant class as well as the ideological cruelty in the revolution, as rapaciousness, superstition, envy and sadism overtake the Russian psyche. Smirnov then concocts a lot of spiritual proportions to get rid of the Bolsheviks in the tumultuous wave of historic revisionism more radical than anything Stalin ever imagined of. Besides the compositional mastery apparent throughout, it's very hard to reconcile the luminous fragility in the youthful girl in Smirnov's "Angel" (1967), the war-forged camaraderie within the "Belarus Station" (1973) or perhaps the lovers' rueful nostalgia within the "Fall" (1974) using this ferocious litany decrying man's inhumanity to guy.Camera (color, widescreen), Nikolay Ivasiv, Yuriy Shaygardanov editor, Alla Urazbaeva music supervisor, Olga Yukecheva production designer, Vladimir Gudilin costume designer, Lydmila Gainceva appear (Dolby SRD), Andrey Hudyakov casting, Tatyana Talkova second unit director, Irina Tretyakova. Examined at Montreal World Film Festival (competing), August. 26, 2011. Running time: 156 MIN. Contact the number newsroom at news@variety.com

EMMYS: Lead Drama Actor Handicap

Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadlines 2011 Emmy coverage. Heres his scorecard assessing the Outstanding Lead Drama Series Actor race. Jon Hamm, Mad Men AMC Why He Was Nominated: The question was never whether Hamm would be nominated. Thats a given. Its his fourth in a row for his iconic Mad Men role of Don Draper but his first without three-time winner Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad in the race due to that AMC shows lack of eligible episodes. Many assume that Hamm has already won a couple of these things. The mystifying truth is that no performer from Mad Men has yet taken home an Emmy. Why He Has To Win: Mad Men creator/showrunner/control freak Matthew Weiner is said to have specifically penned the episode “The Suitcase” as a performance piece for Hamm and co-star Elisabeth Moss (also nominated). It featured the two of them exclusively and powerfully. With Cranston out of the picture, there should be no keeping Hamm from his rightful cruise down victory lane. As a fellow actor and TV academy voters noted to me, Everyone I talk to thinks the Emmy belongs to Jon this time. Its well deserved and frankly overdue. Why He Cant Possibly Win: Hamm hasnt earned one of these things yet, and hes been nominated for Emmys six times in all (also twice as a guest on 30 Rock). Plus, hes up against two guys (Hugh Laurie and Michael C. Hall) who also have been nominated multiple times without winning. Either could well pull an upset. Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire HBO Why He Was Nominated: Because as the mob-tied politician Nucky Thompson on Boardwalk Empire, Buscemi was quite simply extraordinary. Hes already won Golden Globe and SAG awards for the portrayal. Hes also no stranger to the Emmys, logging his fourth nomination (honored for The Sopranos in 2001 for directing and supporting actor in 2004 as well as a 2008 guest nod for 30 Rock). Buscemi is still seeking his first win. Why He Has To Win: Were Boardwalk to defy the experts and upend Mad Men en route to its fourth consecutive win for top drama series — a distinct possibility — Buscemi could easily ride those coattails. Hes got the kind of feature pedigree that plays well to this crowd, notes a series producer. Also bolstering his candidacy is the fact that James Gandolfini won for lead actor three times for The Sopranos in a role not significant different from that of Buscemi — and on the same network. Why He Cant Possibly Win: After Boardwalk premiered on HBO last fall to generally rave notices, Buscemi appeared to have the Emmy all but signed and sealed. That was before Hamm upped his game a couple of notches on Mad Men to become the frontrunner for the gold. But the truth is that Buscemi may not even be the second choice here in going up against the likes of Laurie and Hall. Its a jam-packed category that could fall a couple of ways, and hes no longer the favorite. Hugh Laurie, House Fox Why He Was Nominated: Laurie always gets nominated and always deserves to win, too, even though he never has. Hes been tabbed six times (including five in a row) for his role as the mocking, unorthodox and brilliant Dr. Gregory House on the long-running Fox medical drama. Hes been beaten out by either James Spader (2005, 2007) or Cranston (2008-’09-10). Neither of those guys is in the category this time. Thats the good news. Why He Has To Win: Its really about time. And occasionally, this is how it works at the Emmys. An actor comes up short numerous times and then, suddenly, wins one out of nowhere. Case in point: Kyra Sedgwick taking one in 2010 on her fifth try for TNTs The Closer (and then wasnt nominated at all this year). Lauries performance is consistently towering and indelible, and the riveting episode hes submitted — “After Hours” — features him performing surgery on his own leg in a bathtub. Ouch. Why He Cant Possibly Win: Had Hamm not done what he did this past season on Mad Men, the award was probably Lauries to lose. Hugh should have won in Houses first season, believes a fellow actor and voting academy member. With each passing year, it unfairly becomes increasingly less likely. Such is life in Emmy Land. Hes also the only contender from a broadcast series, which at this point probably doesnt work in Lauries favor. Michael C. Hall, Dexter Showtime Why He Was Nominated: Its Halls fourth consecutive lead actor nod for his portrayal of warmhearted serial killer Dexter Morgan on the Showtime drama. Hes still looking to land his first win, but like Houses Laurie hes a rock-solid part of the Emmy landscape. Why He Has To Win: Nominated for the episode entitled “Teenage Landscape” that finds Dexter searching for killers while at the same time riddled with anxiety over his missing stepdaughter, Hall always merits serious consideration. One voting writer pointed out to me, You know that youre doing something right when you creep people out just by the way you look. Thats the vibe he embodies in this character. Hall also snagged a SAG Award on his fourth nomination in 2010. Why He Cant Possibly Win: Last year looked like Halls time on the strength of his work on the season-capping episode involving his wifes murder. This seasons submission doesnt carry nearly the same explosive energy. Thats not to even mention his being up against Hamm and Buscemi. And if the academy is going to reward someone for their durability, its likely to be Laurie. Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights DirecTV Why He Was Nominated: This is the second consecutive (and final) nomination for Chandler on the departed Friday Night Lights, which also grabbed nods for Outstanding Drama and writing as well as for Chandlers co-star Connie Britton. Its part of a late outpouring of appreciation for the beloved DirecTV high school football hour, one that could well be a statement about the longtime Emmy indifference shown the HBO drama The Wire. Why He Has To Win: As heavy a long shot as he is, Chandler has both sentiment and the Lights cult of devotion going for him. The Big Bang Theory co-creator and showrunner Bill Prady, an unlikely hard-core fan of the series, marvels, Kyle Chandler could do more with a clench of the jaw than a lot of people can do with a two-page monologue. A lot of people both inside and outside the industry feel the same way. Why He Cant Possibly Win: The competition that Chandler faces here is huge, making for some mighty long odds. The fact that his show aired on satcaster DirecTV doesnt much help, either. This is one instance where being really good simply isnt enough. But the nomination alone is itself a victory, as even Chandlers alter ego Coach Eric Taylor could agree. Timothy Olyphant, Justified FX Why He Was Nominated: While hes making his maiden voyage at the Emmys, Olyphant is a proven commodity with a cadre of fans not just from his work as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens in Justified but also from his luminous work on HBOs Deadwood. That this nom proved a bit of a surprise is simply because the Sony Pictures TV series has been operating under the radar. That should change going forward given the sterling work of Olyphant and fellow Emmy nominees Walton Goggins and Margo Martindale. Why He Has To Win: Travel with us back in time nine years to The Miracle of 2002, when a first-time nominee named Michael Chiklis engineered a huge upset in winning the lead actor Emmy for FXs The Shield. He bested a similarly stalwart field that year that included Martin Sheen for The West Wing and Kiefer Sutherland for 24, among others. So it can be done. As a bonus, Olyphants work in the submitted Justified episode is singularly riveting. Why He Cant Possibly Win: This is no place for an Emmy first-timer to be hanging out. But of course, Olyphant has little choice in the matter. That its his initial invite to the Emmy party means hell be able to chalk up his likely loss to experience and return — like Marshal Givens — to do battle another day.

VIDEO: New Ad for Charlie Sheen's Roast Riffs on Dr. Strangelove

Nope, you can’t bring up Dr. Strangelove and feel like a sophisticated comedy aficionado anymore: Charlie Sheen’s Comedy Central roast references the 1963 film in its first advertisement, rendering it almost useless to humanity. That said, I can’t wait for the actual roast — talk about a “war room.” Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen Admittedly, that ad is pretty sensational. All it needed was a wacky tagline like, “When it comes to finding material for Charlie Sheen’s roast, it won’t be Slim Pickens.” Shazam. Could’ve done without the Ozzy, though. [via Deadline]

'Final Destination 5': Q&A With Director Steven Quale and Producer Craig Perry

Warner Bros. For individuals that they like elaborate, tension-building dying moments (and who doesn't?), Final Destination 5 has a few of the franchise's best, redeeming the brand new Line series following a flat 4th movie. That's partially because of director Steven Quale, a longtime James Cameron cinematographer who makes his feature directorial debut here. However it's also because of the horror series' producer, Craig Perry, whose been holding Death's scythe since 2000. Warmth Vision swept up with Perry and Quale in the movie's premiere after-party at Hollywood nightclub Moving Stone on Wednesday evening. Warmth Vision: That which was the method of the brand new movie? Craig Perry: Following the 4th one, despite its success, we recognized it had not been really everything the fans had wanted, and somewhat it had not been really exactly what we'd wanted so that it is. Therefore we understood that people needed to bring new bloodstream and produce in fresh people who would request questions. So Erick Heiser was triggered board like a author, because we understood he really was fast and that he would be a huge fan from the franchise and that he knows the genre. And what we should did using the New Line gang was that people viewed all movies and that we could evaluate what sequences and elements labored and what did not work. Warmth Vision: And also you introduce a brand new wrinkle towards the dying pressure within this movie. Perry: We understood from the beginning we'd need to enhance the ante narratively and never have a similar old very same, therefore we added the concept that you can trade a existence for any existence. There is a debate about when you should introduce that, if you introduce this too early everyone is playing around attempting to kill one another, so there needs to be some a sluggish burn therefore it culminates in large action. It was among Eric's things: He wanted to achieve the figures be armed and break the rules against Dying, provide them with something they might do this would save their lives. It's vital and extremely vital that you the narrative from the movie. The 2nd factor which was important only agreed to be that ending-and clearly I'd rather not reveal it-but you will find there's great twist which i think the fans are likely to add too much for. I believe even individuals who aren't as acquainted with the franchise is going to be satisfied. Warmth Vision: Steven, you probably did visual effects on Avatar and also you directed some James Cameron documentaries. How did you choose to get this to your debut? Quale: After I finished Avatar, doing the visual results of the 2nd unit, I stated, "Let us search for a three dimensional project, because that plays to my talents." There have been a few projects so when the script for Final Destination 5 arrived on the scene, it snapped up my attention. I used to be a large fan from the original movie in 2000 however i thought the ultimate Destination movies had lost their rudder and were type of going adrift. And That I thought it might be an excellent chance to return to the roots and also the fundamentals of the items type of managed to get fun. Warmth Vision: That one feels pretty gory. Is the fact that something you desired to ratchet up? Quale: Well, on the watch's screen time, it's most likely less gory than these, however it was more impactful because we built the suspense and taunted the crowd after which hit them very hard using the gore. It feels more terrible than should you have had it in a normal steady condition. To ensure that may be the difference. Really, getting a smaller amount of the moments using the gore after which when you are getting it, after, say, the squirming close-up you have within the gymnastics scene, really causes the perception that it's terrible and shocking.
